Valparaiso

Just a few hours from Santiago, the city of Valparaiso is a must-visit when in Chile. Be enchanted by this vibrant and colourful coastal town which rises from the harbour, showcasing its unique architecture stacked up along a series of steep hills. The historic quarter is simply beautiful, being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Stroll through the narrow streets, climb its endless staircases, ride historic cable cars, and enjoy panoramic views from its many lofty lookout points.

Highlights

Amazing Street Art

Touring the city’s street art is a highlight that should not be missed! There is a difference between everyday graffiti versus street art and Valparaiso illustrates this point very well; its streets are completely alive with art.

Rich in History

Valparaiso is a city with a lot of history reflected in its buildings. Walking leisurely around the city, you will see the National Maritime Museum, various churches, and Casa Museo La Sebastiana (La Sebastiana Museum House); the home of Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda.

Impressive Architecture

Whether you are wandering along looking at cheerfully-painted houses or walking around the harbour gazing up at the city’s many hills, there is always something beautiful to admire. Valparaiso’s World Heritage designation from UNESCO is thanks to the city’s colonial architecture and distinctive amphitheater-like formation as it ascends upwards onto the hills.

Inspiring Views

Spectacular views from atop the city’s many hills are simply unforgettable. Paseo 21 de Mayo (Walk May 21) is the best spot for views of the port and the western bay. Cerro Concepción (Conception Hill) also has incredible harbour views and offers the best panorama of the entirety of the countless colourful houses.

Ride a Funicular

Due to the number of hills that make up Valparaiso, the city still has up to 16 cable cars (called funiculars) operating. They were declared National Monuments of Chile. The ride is short and steep and you will feel like you’ve been transported back in time.
